Draft 2011 – Pick #2

Lance Kendricks, TE, Wisconsin, 6’4 240

Strengths: A very good overall athlete. A fluid and easy mover in space. Good release quickness off the line of scrimmage and has the ability to settle in his route quickly. A natural pass catcher with soft hands, knows when to snatch or cradle the ball in. Understands coverage and shows the ability to adjust quickly, gear down, and settle in a soft spot within the underneath zone. Has the balance to tiptoe the sideline and extend his body to make catches away from his frame while staying in his route. Solid route runner and doesn’t round off to come out of his breaks. Has the speed to stretch the seam and separate from linebackers or get a step on the safety. Lined up in-line and flexed out; stayed on the field for spread sets. Good blocker at the second level, shows that he can get inside of linebackers and neutralize their pursuit.

Needs Improvement: Loses concentration at times and will feel the incoming defender; leading to short arms and dropped passes. Has narrow hips and isn’t strong enough in his base to drive defensive ends or even linebackers off the line; at best he can wall-off and seal the edge. Releases high off the line in run support and gets thrown around even when he wins leverage. On the ground too much. Can be bumped off routes by linebackers.

Bottom Line: Kendricks started his career at wide receiver, and it shows as he looks more like a bulked up wideout than a natural tight end. His pass catching and route running ability in a pro-style offense make him a viable option in the passing game for teams. His athletic and physical abilities are closely similar to former teammate and 3rd round pick of the New York Giants, Travis Beckum.

Kendricks offers the same skill set and value and will likely be best used in motion sets (move end), blocking linebackers and safeties on the perimeter and providing an outlet target for the quarterback. Has the speed to be a downfield threat if used correctly.

Draft Projection: Mid 3rd to mid 4th round.
